Community employment and recreational opportunities for U46 graduates are among some of the topics to be addressed by the Citizens’ Advisory Council during a series of special education programs in school district-area libraries beginning later this month and running through the end of March.

“As a special needs parent myself, I know what it’s like to struggle in finding information and resources,” said Rebecca Miller, Co-Chairperson of the CAC’s Specialized Student Services Committee in a news release. “Our committee is proud to offer these presentations to the community and hope they will be beneficial to many families.”

School records show that 5,000, or 13 percent, of the U46 student body receive services from the district’s Specialized Student Services department.

Miller and co-chairperson Sarah Thompson worked with U46 administrators to coordinate a series of programs, the release said.

Bridging the Gap Between Eureka Math and Special Education 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27, Room 240 at 355 E. Chicago St. in Elgin

U46 staff will present a seminar that provides an overview of Eureka Math for parents, who are not familiar with the program, including specific adaptations made for children with unique learning styles, the release said. Director for Curriculum and Instruction Valerie Brosius, Specialized Student Services Specialists Susan Nelson, Mary C. Hogan and Rebecca Dahn, and Math Coordinator Amy Ingente with Math Coach Sara Elwood will be speaking.

Holiday Harmony: Strategies to Guide Families Through the Holidays 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at the Elgin Room in Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove St. in Elgin

Streamwood Behavior Health Systems will offer a program to discuss strategies for reduced stressed during the holidays, including working through changes in routine, new situations and sensory overload, the release said.

Post-Graduation Life 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Elgin Room in Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove St. in Elgin

The seminar will address community employment for special education students after graduation, what to expect after school ends and the transition to a productive and enjoyable life, the release said. Speakers from We Grow Dreams and Countryside Association will present.

Speakers from the Bartlett Library, NISRA, NWSRA, and Bartlett Challengers Baseball will discuss summer program offerings for students with special needs, the release said.
